Configuration overview

At the core of this configuration is the A5531C circularly polarised ground antenna, installed beneath or flush with the flooring at the entrance to the fitting rooms.

Positioned at this transition point, the antenna creates a controlled read zone that detects tagged items as they pass over it. This allows the system to register when items enter and exit the fitting rooms, without requiring line of sight or overhead infrastructure.

Design characteristics

  • Flush or in-floor mounting for discreet deployment, preserving the store environment.
  • High gain antenna with distributed radiation pattern optimised for transition detection
  • Suitable for environments where side mounted or overhead mounted antennas are not practical.

How it works

Transition detection process

The fitting room transition configuration uses defined RFID state changes to track item movement between the shop floor and fitting room environment. As tagged items pass through the A5531C read zone, the system updates the item status based on its direction of movement and current location, reading tags within a nominal height of 1.5m.

State 0: Shop floor

Initial item state prior to interaction with the fitting room read point.
In this state, tagged items are located on the retail shop floor and have not yet crossed the A5531C transition zone.

State 1: Entered fitting room

Item has transitioned from the shop floor into the fitting room.
As tagged items pass through the A5531C read zone towards the fitting room foyer, the system registers them as associated with that fitting room location. If an item remains in State 1, it indicates the item is still inside the fitting room.

State 2: Exited fitting room

Items that have transitioned out of the fitting room are assigned to State 2.

As tagged items pass back through the A5531C read zone towards the shop floor, the fitting room tracking lifecycle for that interaction is completed. If the same item is selected and taken into a fitting room again at a later stage, a new tracking cycle is initiated.

A5531C Transition Process

Operational workflow

  1. A customer selects RFID-tagged items from the shop floor to try on in the fitting room. (State 0).
  2. As the customer enters the fitting room, the tagged items pass through the A5531C transition read zone located at the fitting room entrance.
  3. The system registers these items as having entered the fitting room location (State 1).
  4. As the customer exits the fitting room, the tagged items pass through the transition read zone again.
  5. The system records that the items have exited the fitting room, completing that fitting room tracking lifecycle (State 2).
  6. Once the items leave the fitting room environment, the tagged items can be handed over to other RFID-enabled systems operating within the retail ecosystem, such as self check-out, shelf tracking or EAS monitoring.
  7. The items can also go back on the shelf for the next fitting. Thus returning to State 0.
  8. This configuration supports a connected and comprehensive shopper experience throughout the retail journey.

System role of the A5531C

This process is enabled by integrating the A5531C ground antenna into the solution, which establishes a defined transition read zone at the fitting room entrance, allowing accurate detection of item movement without impacting store layout or customer behaviour.

Key advantages of using the A5531C

  1. Customer behaviour insights: Provides visibility into which items are frequently tried on, enabling a better understanding of product popularity and engagement.
  2. Controlled read zone performance
  3. In-floor antenna mounting enables a tightly defined read zone positioned close to the target assets, ensuring accurate transition detection while minimising unwanted reads outside the intended area.
  4. Improved conversion analysis: Identifies the relationship between items tried and items purchased, supporting more informed merchandising and inventory decisions.
  5. Operational efficiency: Detects items left in fitting rooms, enabling staff to quickly return products to the shop floor and maintain availability.
  6. Discreet system integration: In-floor antenna installation ensures no visible infrastructure, maintaining store aesthetics while delivering reliable tracking.
